HSU Splits Day Two Against Cal State East Bay

Hayward, Calif. -- For the second day in a row, No. 19 Humboldt State softball split its doubleheader against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal State East Bay.

The split moves the Jacks to 6-2 in conference play and 9-6 overall. The Pioneers are now 6-6 in the CCAA and 13-7 overall.

"We had two tough games today," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "I'm really proud of the work Madison Williams put in today. She really came out this weekend and proved to herself, her team and this league that she is a competitor. Cal State East Bay is a strong team and I expect to see them later in postseason play."

Katie Obbema got the start in game one, but gave up five runs on six hits. Madison Williams struck out nine in a complete game victory in the series finale.

All of Cal State East Bay's runs on Saturday came off the long ball. Humboldt State suffered déjà vu from Friday, as it stranded 17 runners in the twinbill.

The Jacks head back to Arcata, Calif., where they will prepare for their home opener against Cal State San Bernardino. The four-game series versus the Coyotes begins Friday, March 6, at noon.

GAME ONE

Dani Randall's RBI single up the middle scored Darian Harris to put the Jacks on the scoreboard in the first inning. Harris scored from third, after she reached on a single in her first at-bat.

HSU did not hold the lead for long, as Cal State East Bay's Jaynie MacDonald sent a two-run homer to left field off Obbema in the bottom of the first. McDonald would bring home Lauren Vestal, who led off the inning with a walk.

Obbema ran into more trouble in the bottom of the third when MacDonald, Ali Cerminara and Gabby Gonzalez each homered, making it 5-1. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs against reliever Kellsie Domnitz in the fifth when Cerminara belted her second round-tripper of the game, which scored Marston, who was hit by a pitch.

The Jacks got back on the board in the sixth, as they scored four runs off starting pitcher Sierra Clark. Hannah Williams plated Julie Pena on an RBI single to left field. Pinch hitters Kelly Sonnemann and Amber Rose scored off Hanna Holland's double to left-center field.

Randall went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored a run for HSU in game one.

GAME TWO

After the game one loss, pitcher Madison Williams came out firing — striking out nine, and only surrendering one run in her complete-game win.

Madison Williams fanned 18 Pioneers in 14 innings pitched over the weekend, and got the decision in both of the Jacks victories.

Humboldt State struck early, scoring three runs to open game two, despite a 40-minute lightning game delay.

Harris and Tiffany Hollingsworth went 3-for-4, scored a run and had an RBI in the second game of the twinbill.

Kelsey LaVaute added to Cal State East Bay's home run total with a solo shot to right-center field in the bottom of the third.
