Pitching Duo Leads HSU Past Holy Names

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – Humboldt State starting pitchers recorded 27 strikeouts in Tuesday's road doubleheader sweep of non-conference foe Holy Names. The Lumberjacks won the opener 6-1 and game two 5-0.

The wins improve HSU's overall record to 19-8. The Jacks are riding an eight-game winning streak and are winners of 10 of their last 12 games. Holy Names moves to 3-23 overall this season.

"Our pitchers were on fire today," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "Madison Williams and Katie Obbema were both great today, and they only gave up three total hits and struck out 27."

Madison Williams took the circle in the opener and held Holy Names hitless until the seventh inning. She fanned a career-high 16 batters in her 10th win of the season.

Obbema was brilliant in her game-two shutout. She yielded only two hits in the win, her seventh this season.

Reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week Tiffany Hollingsworth was held without a hit in game one, but tallied three in game two. She also drove in three runs in the series finale.

The Green and Gold host conference rival Sonoma State in a four-game series beginning Friday at the HSU Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

"Today's wins help build great momentum for our program heading into this weekend's series with Sonoma State," said Sarchett.

GAME ONE

Alison McKibbon, Hannah Holland and Darian Harris each had multi-hit outings in the series opener. Dani Randall and Hannah Williams added a two-run and solo home run, respectively.

Madison Williams twice struck out the side in game one.

Holy Names' only run came in the fourth, trailing 4-0. A two-base error put Hailey McGuigan on second base and she came home on an error following a Marissa Romero sac bunt.

Karolanne Tipton took the loss for Holy Names. She gave up five runs, four earned, and surrendered nine hits in six innings.

GAME TWO

Holland scored the game's first run in its opening inning. She started the game with a lead-off double, moved to third on a Harris single and came home on a Holy Names fielding miscue during the next at-bat.

Hawks' starter Vanessa Pulido kept the Green and Gold batters under wraps until the sixth inning. Hannah Williams crushed a solo home run in Pulido's final inning of work.

Tiffany Hollingsworth drilled a two-run double to centerfield and Julie Pena slapped an RBI single up the middle to extend the Jacks' lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning.
