ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball saw its eight-game winning streak snapped by Sonoma State Friday at the HSU Softball Field. The Seawolves swept the series-opening twinbill with 9-7 and 7-5 victories, respectively.
HSU moves to 19-10 overall and 12-6 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the losses. The Seawolves improve to 13-3 in conference play and 21-5 overall.
Sonoma State jumped out to early leads in both games, and the visitors pounced on HSU pitchers. The Lumberjack starters surrendered 14 earned runs and 23 hits. Both
Katie Obbema and
Madison Williams took losses in the doubleheader sweep.
Despite the fact that HSU's winning streak came to an end,
Darian Harris' streak of consecutive games with a hit continued. She collected hits in both games and extended her streak to 25 games, which ties the CCAA record. Her mark matches Christie Hill of Cal State Bakersfield (Apr. 6, 2003 to Jan. 31, 2004) and Cindy Perry of Cal State Dominguez Hills (Feb. 24 to Apr. 20, 2006). The Rocklin, Calif., native's streak began on Feb. 14. Harris was 5-for-8 at the dish against the Seawolves.
Tiffany Hollingsworth, the CCAA's Player of the Week, went 2-for-6 Friday and slapped a three-run homer in the game-one loss. She also drove in a pair in game two.
The teams wrap the series Saturday. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
GAME ONE HSU trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning and had been held to just two hits by Seawolves' ace Amanda Llerena. Llerna fanned seven and gave up five runs in the win.
A Hollingsworth two-out, three-run homer pulled the Jacks even with the Seawolves in the bottom of the frame, but the visitors didn't back down.
Sonoma State added three runs in the seventh to pull back ahead 7-4, and Llerena held off an HSU rally in the home half of the inning.
Dani Randall brought home Harris with an RBI double for the Jacks' last run of the game.
Madison Williams struck out 10, allowed five earned runs and yielded 10 hits in the game one loss.
GAME TWO Five Seawolves compiled multi-hit games in second game of Friday's doubleheader. Ancia Purdy and Keeley Ray led Sonoma State with three hits apiece.
A Taylor Batey three-run long ball in the top of the fourth inning helped Sonoma State pull away in the nightcap. The round-tripper gave the Seawolves a 7-1 advantage.
HSU scored in each of the final four frames, but was unable to overcome the early deficit.
Randall and McKibbon hit home runs in game two.
