Madison Williams’ Three-Hitter Silences Cougars

TURLOCK, Calif. – Madison Williams tossed a three-hit shutout as Humboldt State softball completed its day-one sweep of the Tournament of Champions with a 5-0 victory against Azusa Pacific.

Williams' victory was her 13th of the season, and the win improved the Lumberjacks' overall record to 24-10. HSU picked up wins against Chaminade (5-3) and Western Washington (8-0 in five innings) earlier in the day Friday.

"We played three good games today," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We were firing on all cylinders for the majority of the day and when that happens we are hard to beat. In the first game, Maddie pitched well but struggled a little with her consistency. She put that behind her and came back strong in game three. Katie Obbema threw a solid game for us in game two, and our defense really stepped up. Our defense made great plays when we needed them."

Hanna Holland drew a leadoff walk to open the game, extending her streak of consecutive games in which she reached base safely to 34. Holland scored the game's first run after swiping second and third base, before coming home on a throwing error.

HSU scored three more runs in the third inning. Tiffany Hollingsworth opened the frame with a solo shot – her 14th home run of the season. She wasn't the only Lumberjack to leave the yard as Hannah Williams crushed a two-run homer two batters later.

The Green and Gold added another run in the sixth frame, but it didn't make a difference as Madison Williams stifled opposing batters. She held the Cougars hitless in the final two innings and finished with eight strikeouts.

The Jacks resume Tournament of Champions play Saturday morning versus Hawaii Pacific. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
