LA JOLLA, Calif. – The winning streak continues for the California Collegiate Athletic Association-leading Humboldt State Lumberjacks.
HSU picked up its 16
th and 17
th straight wins en route to a series sweep of UC San Diego Saturday afternoon. The Jacks won the first game 3-2 and the second 4-1.
Freshman
Hanna Holland also snapped the CCAA record for consecutive games reaching base safely. The Oakdale, Calif., product has reached base safely in 45 straight games and shattered the previous mark held by Cori Reinhardt (May 2012 through April 2013).
Saturday's victories improved the Green and Gold's overall record to 36-10 and 22-6 in conference play.
"This weekend wasn't an easy weekend," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "These girls fought hard every game. I thought our pitching did very well and made the right pitches at the right time."
The Jacks trailed 2-0 through the first three innings in the first game of the afternoon.
Darian Harris crushed her third home run of the season, a solo shot, to put the Green and Gold on the board in the fourth, 2-1. The hit was her only one of the afternoon.
Madison Williams held the Tritons to two hits over the final four innings and collected her 18
th win of the year. The Brentwood, Calif., native fanned six, walked one and scattered five hits.
HSU plated two runs in the sixth to capture the win and guarantee a series victory. Four straight hits from the North Coast squad and RBI knocks from
Hannah Williams and
Julie Pena gave HSU the 3-2 edge.
Cyndi Chavez recorded HSU's only multi-hit game in the early game. She went 2-for-3 with a single and a triple, her first of the season.
The Green and Gold did not have to play catch up in the nightcap. Holland hit a leadoff single, stole second and third, and came home on a
Tiffany Hollingsworth sacrifice fly. Holland's single gave her the CCAA record.
Hannah Williams hit a solo home run in the sixth to put HSU ahead 2-0 in the sixth.
The Jacks scored two more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI hits from
Julie Pena and pinch hitter
Carly Perkins. Pena tallied three hits in the win.
Katie Obbema went the distance, struck out four and yielded a run in the finale. She earned her 16
th win in the decision.
"We are starting to get more consistent production from the bottom of the lineup and that is the difference," said Sarchett. "Every player on the team is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and we just have to keep this momentum going."
HSU travels to Chico, Calif., to face Chico State in a four-game series beginning Friday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
