Softball Squeezes a Pair of Wins Away From Toros

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball is known for its big swings, but Thursday it scored a pair of game-winning runs via small ball. The Lumberjacks swept its series-opening doubleheader versus the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-5 in nine innings and 3-2 in seven.

Kelly Sonneman put down a bunt to score pinch runner Amber Rose from third in game one's extra-inning win. Darian Harris provided the small ball heroics in game two. The HSU catcher squared and laid down the game-winning bunt single that brought home Carly Perkins.

"To win on two walk-off squeeze plays, well that's new for HSU Softball," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "Alison McKibbon had a good day and came up big for us in both games. She started off both final innings with a double. We were able to advance the runner to third and then eventually win both games with perfectly executed squeezes. Both Darian and Kelly put down great bunts!"

The win improves HSU's conference record to 16-6 and the team's overall mark to 30-10. The Jacks have won 11 straight games dating back to March 21.

Katie Obbema captured wins in both games of the twinbill. She relieved starter Madison Williams in game one and tossed 2.2 scoreless en route to her 12th win. She took the circle in game two and yielded just one earned run in seven innings. Obbema fanned eight, did not allow a walk and surrendered nine hits in her 13th victory of the season.

"Katie had a good day on the mound and was able to work her way out of jams when needed," said Sarchett.

McKibbon provided some big hits for the home team against the Toros. She tallied four hits in six at-bats, drilled a solo home run and slapped a double off the outfield wall. Her game one long ball was her second of the season.

McKibbon wasn't the only HSU player to hit a round-tripper against Dominguez Hills. Julie Pena hit a homer off game one starter Jamie Duran and scored a pair.

HSU wraps its four-game series against Dominguez Hills with a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m.

"Dominguez Hills is a tough team that doesn't give up," said Sarchett. "We have to keep the momentum going tomorrow and attack from the start and never stop."
