Crew Finishes Day One of WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Humboldt State rowing team knew the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships would come down to four boats — HSU, Western Washington, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego.

And on day one of the WIRAs that's exactly who was in the running in the women's Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 races.

The Lumberjacks first-place finish (7:09.5) in the V8 race was over seven seconds better than UCSB (7:16.9). San Diego (7:18.8) and rivals WWU (7:19.7) finished third and fourth place, respectively.

The Vikings edged the Green and Gold in the women's V4 race. HSU finished second overall with a time of 7:48.4, while WWU finished first with 7:47.0 mark. UCSB finished third (8:01.7), while UCSD finished fifth (8:05.6).

In most of the races on Saturday, HSU was racing along side opponents from all divisions, including Division I and III schools. The heats will be broken down on Sunday when the WIRAs conclude.

HSU finished fourth in their heat, and 12th overall, in the women's Novice 8 with a finish of 7:47.2. The Jacks also finished in the middle of the pack in the Novice 4 race with a time of 8:36.4.

In the women's JV8, the Jacks raced to a fifth-place overall finish against DII competition with a 7:49.6.

The WIRAs conclude at Gold River on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. in the state's capital.
