ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team lost both games in Saturday's Senior Day doubleheader to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay. The Lumberjacks lost the first game 5-1 and dropped the finale in five innings, 10-1.
Monterey Bay captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with the win in game three. HSU punched its ticket to the CCAA Tournament last week, but settled into the No. 2 seed with the result of the first game.
The Lumberjacks begin CCAA Tournament play Friday, May 1 at Arnaiz Softball Complex in Stockton, Calif. HSU is unofficially scheduled to play No. 3 seed Sonoma State in its first tournament matchup. Final CCAA postseason seedings will be released Sunday following the conclusion of the Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego twinbill.
GAME ONE HSU scored its only run after a Monterey Bay miscue in the first inning, which brought home
Tiffany Hollingsworth from second base. The San Leandro, Calif., native reached on a single and finished the game with a hit and two walks.
Cori Reinhardt held the Jacks to six hits and one run in the conference title clincher. She helped herself as she knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single into right field in the third inning.
The Otters added three more runs on four hits in the fifth. Alissa Greenhaw hit a three-run home run to put Monterey Bay ahead 4-1.
Nicole Piers added to the Monterey Bay lead with an RBI double down the right field line in the seventh. Piers went 3-for-3 at the plate in the win.
GAME TWO The Otters didn't take their foot off the pedal in the series finale and rode an eight-run fourth inning to the series victory.
Darian Harris drove home HSU's lone run in the first inning.
Hanna Holland reached first on a leadoff walk and came home on a Harris double.
Holland reached base in both games and extended her reached base safely streak to
53 straight games.
Monterey Bay took the lead with a two-run second inning, but it was its fourth frame that put the game away. The Otters hit three two-run doubles in the inning and finished with seven hits.
Lindsey Clarkson struck out two, surrendered four hits and logged five innings in the Otter victory.
