ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team (1-3-0) can throw its preseason record to the side. The Lumberjacks will play conference games for the remainder of the season, and are on par with the 12 other California Collegiate Athletic Association in terms of conference record.
The Jacks open CCAA competition against two of the top-four teams from a season ago, in Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles this weekend. Both Southern California schools have looked the part to begin this season as well.
"Anytime we have to travel down to Southern California it is going to be difficult for us," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "It is a long trip, and it takes a lot of wear and tear on our guys. Then, to go down and face two of the toughest teams in the south makes it even more difficult."
Friday's match, on the campus of Cal State Dominquez Hills (4-1-0), will be played at the StubHub Center, the home of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Toros have shown some offensive firepower in the non-conference leg of the season. Forward Mike Diaz is tied for second in the CCAA with three goals, and as a team, Dominguez Hills is +6 in goal-differential.
HSU will then face an undefeated Cal State L.A. (2-0-1) team that is second in the conference with only two goals allowed thus far. Goalkeeper Anthony Perez is among the conference's best with a 0.73 goals against average.
"Dominguez and L.A. are always two of the favorites in our conference," said Jungemann. "We anticipate them to remain towards the top of the conference again this season. Our guys are excited, but I think they understand the difficulty of the task ahead and they are going to put the work in."
Both matches will have live stats which can be found on Humboldt State's athletics website. Friday's match will have a video stream available for purchase.
