HONOLULU – The Humboldt State volleyball team (2-1) fell behind in the first two sets, fought back to force a fifth game, but ultimately came up short against Simon Fraser (1-2) in the third match of HSU's season.
"Today was an example of what will happen to us when we play inconsistent volleyball," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood.
After two difficult sets, the Lumberjacks had a statement third game to shift the momentum. The Jacks went up 6-1 after the intermission and never looked back, taking the set 25-14. The Green and Gold ended the set on a 9-1 run.
A much closer fourth set went Humboldt's way as well, with the Jacks needing an extra point to win it 26-24 and force the decisive fifth set.
"We had one solid set, but that wasn't good enough," said Wood. "We made many more unforced errors than we did on Thursday, and that was the difference in the match. We have to quickly move on and get ready for a very good Chaminade team tonight."
The fifth set was tied four times, but not after 6-6. Simon Fraser maintained the lead, and ultimately claimed the match, winning 15-12.
Symone Hayden led the way in kills for the first time this season with 17.
Alondra Haro added a season-high eight blocks to lead HSU.
The Jacks return to action on Saturday night for the final game in Hawaii. Chaminade and Humboldt State play at 10:00 p.m.
