Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Despite Outstanding Second Quarter, Women’s Basketball Falls to Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, CALIF. – It was a second quarter to remember for the Humboldt State women's basketball team, but a cold-shooting second half determined the outcome on Saturday night. The Lumberjacks (8-10, 5-6) dropped their lone game of the week, 51-38, to Cal Poly Pomona (6-12, 4-7).

"It obviously was the worst shooting night that we've had in a long time," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "We made three baskets that weren't 3-pointers."

After trading points to open the game, Kiana Brown hit her first of three 3-pointers to put the Jacks ahead 8-5 with 3:35 to play in the first. Pomona responded by closing out the period with eight unanswered to erase its deficit and lead 13-8 after one.

The Green and Gold tallied the first 11 points of the second quarter, keeping the Broncos scoreless until 2:25 remaining in the period. Following the lone Pomona basket, Brown closed out the quarter with a personal 6-0 run courtesy of two made 3-pointers. The second of which went through on the last possession of the half with three seconds remaining, giving the Jacks the double-figure lead at the half, 25-15.

Amanda Kunst drained two shots from the outside in the first two HSU possessions of the third quarter. The Broncos, however, were able to cut into the lead with a 14-2 run of their own, making it a one-possession game at 33-31. Sophie Northern ended the home team's run with a corner jumper from long range with 1:06 remaining in the quarter. The score held, and HSU went into the final quarter up five, 36-31.

The home team was not done with its comeback effort. The Broncos scored 20 of the 22 fourth quarter points to put the Jacks away, 51-38.

"In the second quarter we were a little more patient," said Gleason. "We moved the ball well and didn't settle for a good shot, we took great shots. In the second half we settled too much. We need to increase the intensity going forward with two really good teams coming in this week."

Humboldt State shot a season low 18.5 percent (10-54), and did not convert a fourth-quarter field goal.. Seven of the 10 field goals came from long range after attempting a season-high 31 from the outside. Cal Poly Pomona's 16 made field goals is the fewest made by an HSU opponent this season.

Kelci Haueter recorded her first career double-digit rebounding game, collecting 10 boards for the Green and Gold.

Humboldt returns to the North Coast this upcoming week for a pair of home conference games to close out the month. UC San Diego visits Lumberjack Arena on Jan. 28 and Cal State San Bernardino follows on Jan. 30. The Jacks dropped the first meeting with both teams to open January.
