Spencer's Goal Lifts HSU Men's Soccer Over Gators

ARCATA, Calif. – A double-overtime goal by Cameron Spencer on an assist from Humberto Alverez propelled Humboldt State men's soccer over San Francisco State 2-1 Friday afternoon.

With the win HSU improves 4-6-1 overall on the season and 2-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. San Francisco State falls to 6-6 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play.

"This was a great win for our guys," said head coach Fred Jungemann. "We have worked hard so many other days like today only for the game to end in frustration. I am really happy for them and proud of the effort they put in today. San Francisco is a very tough team and put us under pressure from start to finish. The game could have gone either way and probably would have been more fair as a draw. We will enjoy it for today though and regroup tomorrow as we prepare for Monterey Bay on Sunday."

HSU took an early lead when Trice Smith found the back of the net in the 21st minute. SF State quickly answered to tie things up in the 28th minute on a goal by Richard Leon.

Statistically the match was played very evenly. The Gators had 15 shots, 10 of which were shots on goal. On the other side, HSU totaled 13 shots, with eight of those being shots on goal.

Jacks goalkeeper Chris Cherms totaled nine saves in the victory.

Humboldt State is back in action Sunday afternoon when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. Sunday will be Public Service Appreciation game, and the day will be highlighted by free admission to all public safety employees and their families, halftime games for the kids and a player meet and greet after the matches.
