ARCATA, Calif. – During a torrential rainstorm, Cal State Monterey Bay came back from a goal down to defeat Humboldt State men's soccer 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
"The weather had a big impact on the way the game was played today and made it hard for both teams," said HSU head coach
Fred Jungemann. "Our guys fought hard and defended well for most of the game, but we struggled to get much going on the offense of side of the field. Full credit to Monterey Bay, they fought hard and deserve the win. We will have to regroup quickly as we have a short turnaround to prepare for our game on Wednesday versus Sonoma."
With the loss, the Lumberjacks fell to 4-7-1 overall and to 2-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Monterey Bay improved to 3-8-2 and 1-7-2 in the CCAA.
The Otters outshot the Lumberjacks 19-5 on the afternoon, including an 11-3 edge in the opening 45 minutes.
HSU got on the board first when
Korey Gilmore scored a goal on a high-arching shot from about 25 yards out, with an assist from
Isaiah Dairo in the 19th minute.
The Otters evened the score with a goal in the 36th minute from Adam Voloder, and Alejandro Garcia provided the assist.
In the 54th minute, Monterey Bay scored the game-winning goal when Jonathan Cox found the back of the net with an assist from Osvaldo Espinoza.
Defensively, the Jacks were led by goalie Chris Cherms who recorded a season-high 13 saves.
HSU looks to return to its winning ways next week when it travels to face Sonoma State (Wednesday, Oct. 19) and Chico State (Sunday, Oct. 23).
