ARCATA, Calif. – Just one night after suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Sonoma State, Humboldt State volleyball bounced back and picked up a straight set (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) victory over San Francisco State Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.
The win improves the Lumberjacks to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With the loss, the Gators fall to 1-16 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
"Tonight was definitely a step in the right direction," said head coach
Kelly Wood. "We still have things to work on, but right now we need to get some rest and get prepared for three big conference matches this week."
In the first set, the Jacks were buoyed by a 6-0 run that gave them a 13-7 lead they would never relinquish. In the second set, the score was tied at 21 when the Lumberjacks went on a 4-0 run to close out the set and entered the intermission with a 2-0 set advantage.
In the final set the Gators jumped out to an early 9-5 lead, but the Lumberjacks battled back and were able to knot the set at 12-12. While the remainder of the final set was a back and forth affair, the Jacks finished off SF State with a kill from
Nicole Bewley.
"In particular I thought
Nicole Bewley played a great match," said Wood. "I also believe we cleaned up our passing in tonight's match. It felt really good to get a win after a difficult last few matches."
Bewley led the Lumberjacks offensively with a team-high 14 kills. Both
Jessica Lammers (17) and
Katherine Rifilato (14) recorded double digit assists in the match. On the defensive side of the court,
Symone Hayden led the Jacks with 20 digs.
HSU volleyball returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Cal State East Bay in a 7 p.m. road match.
