Volleyball Hits The Road For A Trio of Conference Matches

ARCATA, Calif. – After splitting a pair of home matches last weekend, Humboldt State volleyball returns to the road for California Collegiate Athletic Association matches against Cal State East Bay (Wednesday, Oct. 19), UC San Diego (Friday, Oct. 21) and Cal State San Marcos (Saturday, Oct. 22).

HSU enters the week with a 9-8 overall record and a 4-5 record in CCAA competition, which is good for fifth place in the North Division.

Last week the Lumberjacks dropped a pair of five-set matches to Cal State Monterey Bay on the road and Sonoma State at home, before rebounding with a 3-0 victory over San Francisco State.

"We were disappointed after Friday night, but we definitely showed progress," said head coach Kelly Wood. "I am extremely pleased with how we battled back on Saturday. It's hard to beat anybody in three no matter where they are in the standings."

This week the Jacks start off their road trip with a match against Cal State East Bay.  The Pioneers currently stand at 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA, and they are led by Katie Ireland who averages 9.27 assists per set.

"East Bay is really catching fire," said Wood. "They are a very young and athletic team, and we are going to have to serve them tough and play scrappy, tough defense."

On Friday evening the Jacks will face UC San Diego. The Tritons have a 10-8 record overall and have posted a 7-3 record in the CCAA. Meagan Wright, who has recorded 274 kills for the campaign, leads UCSD on the offensive end.

HSU wraps up the road swing Saturday afternoon with a match against Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars are led defensively by Faith Fortune who averages a block per set played.

"It is definitely a challenging part of the season but it is nothing new to us," said Wood. "Once we get through this stretch we are going to have four of our last six matches at home, which will definitely be beneficial to us."

The Jacks return home next weekend for a pair of home matches. HSU will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills (Thursday, Oct. 27) before hosting Cal State Los Angeles (Friday, Oct. 28).
