ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State women's basketball returned to the hardwood Tuesday and captured an exhibition win over Simpson, 61-51, in Lumberjack Arena.
"I'm definitely happy we pulled off the win," said head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "However, that's what these exhibition games are for. You learn a lot about your team individually and collectively, and we're going to learn a lot from this."
The Lumberjacks trailed 26-24 at halftime, but they outscored the Redhawks 17-5 in the third quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish. Simpson cut the lead to seven points in the fourth quarter, but HSU held on for the win.
"We turned the ball over too many times in the last half of the fourth quarter," said Bento-Jackson. "We gave Simpson hope. We're going to have to have a lot of productive practices before we play a good Southern Oregon team."
Madeline Hatch and Jessica Renata were HSU's top scorers and finished with 12 points apiece.
Kindall Murie also chipped in with nine points for the Jacks.
Teylor McMiller and Mikaela Shannon each had 11 rebounds in the win.
Simpson's Esther Wofford led all scorers with 13 points, while teammate Alyson Rippingham contributed 11 points in a losing effort for the Redhawks.
Humboldt State will wrap up the exhibition portion of the schedule on Nov. 3 when it hosts Southern Oregon. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
