ARCATA, Calif. – Despite rallying to even the match at a set apiece entering the intermission, Humboldt State volleyball lost at home to Cal State Los Angeles 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 19-25) in California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Friday night.
The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 10-12 overall and 5-9 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles improve to 15-7 overall and 11-3.
"I thought we played pretty good volleyball tonight," said head coach
Kelly Wood. "Cal State Los Angeles is a very good team with exceptional middles but I think we outplayed them in a lot of areas. Our setting got better and our serve receive was very good. I was very pleased with the way our team played tonight. It was progress for us. We expect to come back and fight for these final two weeks of the season."
Symone Hayden led HSU with a match-high 14 kills to go with 15 digs.
Jessica Lammers dished out 24 assists on the evening for the Green and Gold while,
Rachel Tostberg chipped in with 20. On the defensive side of the net, libero
Sarah Shively recorded a match-high 18 digs.
In the opening set, HSU and the Golden Eagles were tied at 16-16 before Cal State Los Angeles went on a 9-0 run to close out the set.
In the second set, the Jacks hit .324 and went on an early 10-2 run to give them a lead they would not relinquish.
In the final set, HSU fell behind early but was able to close the gap to a single point before eventually losing 25-19.
For the match, Humboldt State recorded the same number of kills as Cal State Los Angeles (53) but was undone by 23 attacking errors.
The Jacks hit the road for the final time in the 2016 campaign when they travel to take on San Francisco State (Friday, Nov. 3) and Sonoma State (Saturday, Nov. 4).
