SEATTLE – A reloaded Seattle Pacific squad was too much for Humboldt State men's basketball as the Lumberjacks dropped their season opener 102-90 in Brougham Pavilion.
A 3-pointer from
Tyras Rattler Jr. gave the Green and Gold a 6-4 lead less than two minutes into the game, but then the home team got to work. Seattle Pacific went on a 21-7 run and led by as many as 27 points in the first half. The Falcons had a 59-38 advantage at the break.
The Jacks shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, and they were unable to get started from outside the arc. HSU hit just 3-of-18 attempts from 3-point range.
Humboldt State regrouped during halftime and set about chipping away at Seattle Pacific's lead. A
Colin Caslick layup with 4:58 left to play trimmed the lead to 11, 88-77, but that was as close as the North Coast squad got to a comeback.
Nikhil Lizotte and Rattler were the Jacks' leading scorers with 17 points apiece. Rattler finished one rebound shy of a double-double, and he led the Green and Gold with nine boards.
Colin Caslick (16) and
Malik Morgan (12) also scored in double figures.
Joe Rasmussen was the Falcons' No. 1 scoring threat with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He connected on all four of his long-range attempts.
The Jacks return to action Saturday, Nov. 12 against Simon Fraser in their final game of the Sodexo Tip-Off Challenge. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
