SEATTLE – Humboldt State women's basketball fell behind early and was not able to overcome a 21-point halftime deficit in Friday's 91-49 loss to Western Washington.
"I wish I had some positives to say, but the bottom line is we were not good in any area," said Head Coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I am extremely disappointed."
Humboldt State allowed 91 points and committed 19 turnovers
in the season-opening loss to Western Washington. The Vikings (1-0) capitalized on 51.5 percent (34-for-66) shooting from the field to defeat the Lumberjacks (0-1).
The Jacks held a 10-7 lead in the first quarter before Western Washington embarked on an 18-0 run between the end of the first and start of the second quarters. The Vikings outscored HSU 23-4 in the second quarter and went into the intermission with a 35-14 lead.
Western Washington extended its lead in the third and fourth quarters, before closing out a 42-point win.
Catharine Rees was HSU's top scorer and finished with 17 points while
Teylor McMiller added 10.
Riann Thayer grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists for the Green and Gold.
Mikaela Shannon also recorded four assists in the loss.
Western Washington's Taylor Peacocke led all scorers with 28 points while teammate Alyson Rippingham contributed 26 points in the Vikings win.
Humboldt State will finish its season-opening road trip Saturday at 5 p.m. when it takes on West Region Challenge host Seattle Pacific.
