SEATTLE – For the second consecutive afternoon, Humboldt State women's basketball was unable to recover from a halftime deficit in Saturday's 67-36 loss to Seattle Pacific.
"I learned a lot about our basketball team this weekend, and we have a lot of work to do," said Head Coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We will get better."
Humboldt State committed 24 turnovers and shot 29.4 percent (15-51) from the field in the loss to Seattle Pacific. The Falcons (1-0) shot 44.4 percent (24-for-54) from the floor and held a 36-24 rebounding advantage over the Lumberjacks (0-2).
The Jacks only trailed by a point, 12-11, at the end of the first quarter before Seattle Pacific went on a 15-0 run to start the second quarter. The Falcons outscored HSU 20-5 in the second period and entered the half with a 32-16 lead.
Seattle Pacific extended its lead in the second half on the way to a 67-36 win.
Tyra Turner was HSU's top scorer and finished with nine points.
Riann Thayer led the Green and Gold for the second afternoon in a row, grabbing four rebounds, while Turner and
Allison Zalin each recorded two assists in the loss.
Seattle Pacific's Courtney Hollander led all scorers with 16 points, while teammate Erica Pagano chipped in with nine points in the Vikings win.
The West Region Challenge All-Tournament team was announced at the conclusion of the game and included Rees, Taylor Peacocke and Kiana Gandy from Western Washington along with Holander and McPhee from Seattle Pacific. Peacocke walked away with MVP honors after leading the Vikings to two wins in the tournament.
Humboldt State will open its home campaign as well as California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Thursday at 7 p.m. when it welcomes Cal State San Marcos to Lumberjack Arena.
