San Marcos Tops Women’s Basketball in Conference Opener

ARCATA, Calif. – Seeking its first win of the 2016-17 campaign, Humboldt State women's basketball fell behind late in the second quarter and could not overcome a four-point halftime deficit in its 65-51 loss to Cal State San Marcos on Thursday. The game served as the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.

"When a team goes on a run, we've got to weather the storm," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We have to stop them, and we didn't do a good job with that tonight. We allowed them to get too comfortable in their offense, and we committed too many turnovers"

Humboldt State committed 18 turnovers and was outrebounded 35-29 in the conference-opening loss. The Cougars (2-1, 1-0 CCAA) capitalized on 40 percent (22-for-55) shooting from the field and 88 percent (15-for-17) from the free-throw line to defeat the Lumberjacks (0-3, 0-1 CCAA).

The Jacks jumped out to an early lead before finishing the first quarter with a 14-8 advantage.  HSU shot 60 percent from the field and was led by Kindall Murie who recorded four points during the opening period.

Cal State San Marcos opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run before HSU answered with a 7-2 run of its own. San Marcos then scored the final eight points to close out the period.

The Cougars outscored HSU 26-16 in the second quarter and entered the intermission with a 34-30 lead. The first half featured eight lead changes. Catharine Rees led the Green and Gold with eight first half points.

San Marcos extended its lead in the third by six points and started out the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run before closing out a 14-point win.

Teylor McMiller was HSU's top scorer and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Tyra Turner (11) and Rees (10) also compiled double-digit scoring totals. Murie led the Jacks with nine rebounds.

Savannah Camp led all scorers with 19 points and teammate Ashley Jenkins contributed 15 points in the Cal State San Marcos win.

Humboldt State returns to non-conference play Saturday, Nov. 19, when it hosts Cal Baptist. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
