ARCATA, Calif. –Humboldt State women's basketball welcomed its first ranked opponent of the year to Lumberjack Arena Saturday as it hosted No. 2 ranked California Baptist. Despite a season-high 18 points from Catharine Rees, the Lumberjacks dropped a 93-59 decision to the Lancers.
"Cal Baptist is definitely a very good basketball team," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "They're extremely efficient on offense and shoot a high percentage. Playing a team of this caliber will definitely help us come conference time."
Humboldt State was outrebounded 39-28 in the loss and committed 21 turnovers. The Lancers (5-2) capitalized on 52 percent (36-for-69) shooting from the floor and 24 points off turnovers to defeat the Lumberjacks (0-4).
Cal Baptist jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, forcing the Lumberjacks to call an early timeout. While Teylor McMiller scored seven points in the opening period, the Jacks trailed 24-15 after the first quarter.
The Lancers outscored HSU 28-17 in the second quarter and entered the intermission with a 52-32 lead. Rees and McMiller led the Lumberjacks with nine first half points.
Cal Baptist opened up the second half with an 18-2 run and extended its lead to 74-32 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Lancers increased their lead by two more points and left Lumberjack Arena with a 93-59 win.
Rees was HSU's top scorer and finished with 18 points while Lynzzy Troxell contributed 12 points in only 15 minutes of play. Kindall Murie led the Green and Gold with five rebounds while Tyra Turner dished out five assists.
Kamille Diaz led all scorers with 24 points and teammate Cassidy Mihalko scored 21 points in the Cal Baptist win.
Humboldt State wraps up its three-game homestand Tuesday, Nov. 22 when it hosts Holy Names. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
