ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After claiming a straight-set victory over San Francisco State last night, Humboldt State volleyball suffered a straight-set defeat to Sonoma State (23-25, 17-25, 20-25) in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday night.
With the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 11-13 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA. The Seawolves improve to 14-9 overall and 12-4.
"Tonight was a tough loss, but the girls fought," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "We made just a few too many self-inflicted errors, and we need to minimize those. We are ready to finish out the season at home this week."
Nicole Bewley led Humboldt with a team-high 13 kills and hit .423.
Rachel Tostberg recorded 17 assists for the Lumberjacks, while
Jessica Lammers chipped in 14. On the defensive side of the net,
Symone Hayden recorded 18 digs while
Sarah Shively added 12 for the Green and Gold.
In the opening set, the two teams were tied at 23-23 before the Seawolves picked up the next two points to claim the set. The Lumberjacks hit .227 for the set and were led with eight assists from Lammers and five kills from Bewley.
Sonoma State jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the second set, forcing an HSU timeout. The Lumberjacks closed the gap to three points, but the Seawolves pulled away to take a 25-17 win and entered the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
In the final set, Sonoma State once again jumped out to an early lead. While the Green and Gold closed the lead to one point on multiple occasions, the Seawolves held on and finished off the sweep with a 25-20 victory.
For the match, Humboldt State hit .168 and recorded 38 kills. The defense recorded five blocks and 61 digs.
The Jacks return home for their final two matches of the 2016 regular season when they host Cal State East Bay on Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
