SAN MARCOS, Calif. – No. 4 Humboldt State softball extended its winning streak to seven straight with a pair of wins over conference newcomer Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon.
The Jacks won the series opener 8-0 in five innings and edged the Cougars 2-0 in game two. HSU improved to 11-1-1 overall and 6-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the wins.
"Right now we are firing on all cylinders," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "Our pitchers are doing a great job of keeping us in the ball game, and our offense is getting on top and staying there. We just have to keep working hard and never stop pushing."
HSU wraps the four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch for game three of the series is scheduled for 11 a.m.
GAME ONE (Humboldt State 8, Cal State San Marcos 0 - Five Innings) Outstanding pitching and timely hitting helped the Green and Gold capture a victory in game one.
Katie Obbema tossed 4.0 innings of three-hit ball en route to her fourth win of the season. The Morgan Hill, Calif., native has not surrendered a walk in her last two outings.
HSU scored runs in the first and third inning and carried a 2-0 advantage into the fifth frame. The Jacks plated six runs on six hits in the fifth to clinch the win.
Every batter in the starting lineup finished with a hit versus San Marcos.
Tiffany Hollingsworth and
Cyndi Chavez each had multi-hit performances, and Hollingsworth drove in two runs in the fifth on an RBI double.
Amanda Horbasch took the loss for the Cougars and gave up six earned runs in 5.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO(Humboldt State 2, Cal State San Marcos 0) Two runs proved to be all the Jacks needed in game two as
Madison Williams put on a clinic inside the circle.
Williams pitched her second complete game shutout of the season and fanned nine as she improved to 5-0 this season. She scattered three hits and allowed just one run in her 7.0 innings or work.
Breonna Bejaran was responsible for both Green and Gold runs. She fired an RBI single up the middle to scored
Darian Harris in the fourth and hit her second home run of the season in the seventh.
Chavez, Harris and
Hanna Holland each tallied hits in the nightcap.
Holland extended her streak of games reaching base safely to 18 straight, and she increased her stolen base total to 15 this season.
