Softball Defeats No. 2 Dixie State, Williams Pitches No Hitter in Second Game

ST. GEORGE, Utah. – Humboldt State softball proved that it can compete with anybody in the country. The undefeated Lumberjacks (3-0-1) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the tournament host and No. 2-ranked team in the country, Dixie State. Not to be outdone, Madison Williams pitched her first career no-hitter for the Green and Gold in a 9-0 shutout over Colorado State – Pueblo in the nightcap.

"It was a good day," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "These girls came out knowing that we had two tough games ahead of us, and they stepped up to the challenge. We knew that if we were going to be successful we had to have the intensity from the first pitch to the last."

Humboldt State 4, Dixie State 1

A scoreless game through four innings, it was the fifth inning where HSU was able to manufacture the game's first run. Breonna Bejaran led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and getting aboard. Halle Williams took over as the pinch runner for Bejaran and was sacrificed over to second by Darian Harris. A Kalyn Paque single put runners on the corners, but Paque would get caught stealing on the next batter. After Illa Haley and Hanna Holland worked back-to-back walks, it was a fielding error that allowed Kelly Sonnemann to safely reach base and the run to score.

Dixie State answered in the sixth with an unearned run of its own, capitalizing on an HSU throwing error.

Continuing the theme of scoring unearned runs, the Green and Gold put up three in the top of the seventh to retake the lead. With two on, Tiffany Hollingsworth came up with a timely double to give the lead back to the Jacks. A two-run fielding error gave HSU a 4-1 cushion heading into the final half inning.

"Dixie is a tough team, and I know we will see them again," said Sarchett. "Katie threw a strong game and pitched out of some sticky situations using pitches she is not used to relying on. The girls grinded in this game and got the big hit when we needed it."

Katie Obbema pitched her second complete game in as many days, striking out five in the process. Neither team allowed an earned run.

Humboldt State 9, Colorado State - Pueblo 0

Following a rare tie in her first outing of the season, Williams pitched a no-hitter in game two and picked up her first win of 2016. The junior fanned 12 Friday and has 24 strikeouts in two starts this season.

"I am really proud of Maddie and the way she threw today," said Sarchett. "She had something to prove after yesterday, and she did it with a no hitter."

The bats came alive in the second game for the Lumberjacks. HSU crossed the plate in each of the game's five innings, an effort which included putting six runs on the board in the second.

Following up her team-leading two-RBI performance in the opening game, Roberts batted in four more runners against the ThunderWolves, including a bases-clearing double in the second.

Sonneman recorded RBI singles in consecutive innings, and Darian Harris and Julie Pena brought in a run apiece.

"Unlike game two against Academy of Art, we came out hot and never stopped," said Sarchett. "Our bats came alive and we had production all though the lineup. "
