ST. GEORGE, Utah – In the second day of the Dixie State Tournament, Humboldt State softball (4-1-1) picked up a win and a loss. After shutting out Colorado State – Pueblo 9-0 on Friday, the Jacks picked up a second five-inning shutout on Saturday, 8-0, over Fort Lewis. Ranked West Texas A&M used a pair of home runs to build just enough of a lead over HSU to fend off a late-inning rally.
Humboldt State 8, Fort Lewis College 0 A three-run first inning gave the Jacks an early lead against Fort Lewis College.
Hanna Holland manufactured the first run by singling, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a second wild pitch.
Tiffany Hollingsworth cleared the bases and scored Kelly Sonneman with her first home run of the season two batters later.
The Green and Gold added another run in the second, when
Carly Perkins scored
Cyndi Chavez with an RBI double.
The biggest offensive inning came in the fourth. After
Sydney Roberts walked and
Julie Pena doubled,
Breonna Bejaran added a no-out double of her own to score two. Humboldt would add two more in the inning to ultimately earn the 8-0 win.
Madison Williams pitched four scoreless to en route to her second win of the season. In her first appearance of the season,
Kalyn Paque tossed a scoreless frame and fanned two Skyhawks.
West Texas A&M 3, Humboldt State 2 The Jacks found themselves trailing for the first time this season in the nightcap. No. 22-ranked West Texas A&M capitalized on a pair of home runs in back-to-back innings to put the Jacks in a 3-0 hole after three frames.
Hollingsworth put the Green and Gold on the board with a two-run jack to right. She finished with two home runs Saturday afternoon.
HSU made it interesting in the final frame, loading the bases in the seventh. The Jacks were unable to bring home the tying run, and left all three on base, and dropped their first game of the season.
