No. 3 Softball Rolls to Two More Wins at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. – No. 3-ranked Humboldt State softball continued to mow down Tournament of Champions opposition Saturday at Pedretti Sports Complex. The Lumberjacks blanked Central Washington 8-0 in game one and closed out the afternoon with a 6-2 win over Western Oregon.

"It was really nice to see our bats come together today," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "All day we had some big hits in some pressure situations. Our pitchers both threw well today and were able to keep scoring to a minimum."

The Jacks improved to 29-3-1 overall and will close out the Tournament of Champions Sunday. HSU will face Great Northwest Athletic Conference-leading St. Martin's in the first game and take on Montana State Billings in the nightcap.

"I am looking forward to a strong finish tomorrow," said Sarchett. "St. Martin's and Montana are both tough teams, but if we go out there and play like today we will be successful."

GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 8, Central Washington 0 – 6 innings)

Tiffany Hollingsworth swatted her team-leading eighth home run of the season to give HSU a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A throwing error by the Wildcats (23-9) shortstop pulled their first baseman off the bag and allowed Darian Harris to reach base in the previous at-bat.

HSU added another run in the fourth, but it was a three-run fifth inning that broke things open for the Green and Gold. Julie Pena hit an RBI single, and Breonna Bejaran lined a two-run double into the left field corner to give the Jacks a 6-0 lead.

Pena ended the game on a two-out double to right centerfield in the sixth.

After taking off Friday, senior Katie Obbema looked refreshed and reloaded in the circle. Obbema needed just 64 pitches to collect her 13th win of the season. She fanned seven and allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout.

GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 6, Western Oregon 2)

Western Oregon struck first in the late game. A two-base error gave the Wolves (15-15) a runner at second with no outs, and shortstop Lexi Jennings brought the runner home with a single to give them a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.

Madison Williams silenced the Wolves until the seventh inning and had another dominating performance. She went the distance and fanned 11 opposing batters en route to her 13th victory. The Brentwood, Calif., native allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits.

The Jacks added two runs in the fourth to take a one-run lead, 2-1. Pena slapped an RBI single and Illa Haley hit a sacrifice fly to put HSU on the board.

The Green and Gold added another run in the fifth and three more in the seventh inning to take a commanding 6-1 advantage. HSU finished the game with nine hits, one more than in game one.

Hanna Holland, Kalyn Paque and Cyndi Chavez each had a multi-hit performance in the second game of the afternoon.

Holland extended her hitting streak to 24 consecutive games and has reached base safely in 36 straight games. She finished the day with five stolen bases, and the Oakdale, Calif., product is five stolen bases shy of matching her total from last season (48).
