TURLOCK, Calif. – No. 3-ranked Humboldt State softball closed out the Tournament of Champions with a pair of wins Sunday and earned its third consecutive Tournament of Champions title. The Lumberjacks defeated Saint Martin's 3-1 in the early game and topped Montana State Billings 9-1 in five innings to finish the annual event with a 6-0 mark.
HSU improved its overall season record to 31-3-1 following the Tournament, and the Jacks were one of just two programs to go undefeated during the event.
Sophomore outfielder
Hanna Holland was tabbed the All-Tournament Team Most Valuable Player, and junior pitcher
Madison Williams and senior pitcher
Katie Obbema were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Stanislaus State is scheduled to visit the North Coast for a four-game series on April 8-9. The four games against the Warriors begin an eight-game homestand that concludes with midweek games against Sonoma State on April 11 and 12.
GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 3, Saint Martin's 1)
Saint Martin's opened the game with two hits, but it was two costly errors that gave the Saints (27-9) their first run and the early lead. Mary Dettling hit a lead-off single and came home on a fielding and throwing error by the Jacks four batters later.
An RBI single from
Tiffany Hollingsworth evened the score in the third inning, and a solo home run from
Illa Haley the next inning gave the Jacks a 2-1 advantage. Haley's long ball was her second of the season and second of the Tournament.
HSU added an insurance run on an RBI single from
Cyndi Chavez in the three-hit sixth inning.
Katie Obbema logged her 16
th complete game of the season, surrendered just four hits and struck out six. With the win, she improved her record to 14-2.
Holland, Haley and Chavez each had a multi-hit performance versus the Saints. Holland went 3-of-4 at the dish and stole a base. The Oakdale, Calif., product has reached base safely in 37 consecutive games and is riding a 25-game hitting streak. She also has a stolen base in 11 straight games.
GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 9, Montana State Billings 1 – Five Innings)
Holland led the Jacks with three hits, three RBI and four stolen bases in game two. She ended the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Yellowjackets were limited to just three hits as Williams earned her third victory of the Tournament. Williams pitched 5.0 innings, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run.
HSU finished the game with six stolen bases.
