ARCATA, Calif. – No. 3-ranked Humboldt State softball returned to California Collegiate Athletic Association action focused on winning a conference title, and it showed Friday versus Stanislaus State. The Lumberjacks defeated the Warriors 8-0 in five innings and then closed out the afternoon with a 9-2 victory.
"We got two good wins today," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "We struggled a little bit at first with our offense, but once it came alive it didn't stop. It was nice to see production from up and down the lineup and from our bench."
HSU improved to 33-3-1 overall and 22-2 in conference play and extended its winning streak to eight straight.
The Jacks conclude the four-game series with the Warriors Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 8, Stanislaus State 0 – Five Innings)
A pair of fourth inning home runs courtesy of
Darian Harris and
Breonna Bejaran sparked the Jacks in game one. Harris crushed a solo effort, her first home run of 2016, to lead off the inning. With a 1-0 count and a runner at second, Bejaran swatted a two-run blast to right centerfield. HSU scored five runs on five hits in the frame.
Julie Pena, Bejaran and
Sydney Roberts each had RBI hits in the fifth to secure the win.
Not to be outdone,
Katie Obbema had a masterful performance in the circle. Obbema limited the Warriors to one hit in 5.0 innings, gave up no walks and fanned seven. She picked up her 15
th win of the season.
GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 9, Stanislaus State 2)
Stanislaus State struck first in game two, but HSU answered and completed the doubleheader sweep.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, the Jacks scored three runs on two hits to take the lead.
Winona Vigil hit a two-run double and moved to third on the throw.
Cyndi Chavez followed up the Vigil at bat with a squeeze play. She dropped a bunt third base side and Vigil slid under the tag of the catcher, but Chavez was caught trying to advance to second base on the play.
HSU added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and
Kalyn Paque swatted a two-run homer in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Madison Williams struck out 13 Warriors en rout to her team-leading 16
th win. She went the distance, allowed two runs and surrendered five hits.
