SAN FRANCISCO – All it took was one foul in the corner of the penalty box to give the Humboldt State men's soccer team it's opportunity to go ahead in its first game of the year. Following 77-plus minutes of scoreless action,
Johan Muliadi, collected his own rebound off a missed penalty kick and buried the second opportunity in the back of the net for the game-winner.
"Today was a very positive effort from the whole team," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "With such a young team, we are trying to stay humble and build confidence every day."
Humboldt State (1-0) defeated William Jessup (0-1) in
Robert Quintero's first career start. The sophomore was forced into action early as the Jacks were outshot 6-1 in the first half, but finished with three saves and no goals allowed in his 90 minutes in net.
The Green and Gold responded at the break and outshot the Warriors in the second half, 6-3. Muliadi and
Daniel Allred tallied two shots apiece.
"It was certainly not a beautiful win, but it was a great first step," said Jungemann. "William Jessup put us under a lot of pressure, but our guys responded very well."
The win is HSU's first shutout victory to open a season since blanking William Jessup, 3-0, in 2009.
The Jacks return to action on Saturday, with a neutral-site contest against Hope International in San Francisco. This is the first time in program history that the two sides will have met.
