Late HSU Goal Gives Men’s Soccer 1-1 Draw

SAN FRANCISCO – Despite trailing in the final 10 minutes of regulation, Humboldt State men's soccer (1-0-1) was able to add a late goal and earn the overtime draw. Isaiah Dairo scored his first goal for the Lumberjacks in the 82nd minute to even the score after Holy Names (2-0-2) went ahead with a 50th minute penalty kick.

"Our guys showed a lot of character today and worked their socks off again," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "It was another hard-fought, scrappy game with very little in the way of attacking rhythm for us. The guys showed a lot of grit though, and even managed to come back from being a goal down."

Following a scoreless first half, Hope International benefitted from a call in the box to earn a penalty kick five minutes into the second half. After converting, the Royals held the 1-0 lead for the next 30-plus minutes.

With their backs against the wall and time ticking down, the Jacks proved they have an answer. Mumbi Kwesele played fellow first-year Lumberjack Dairo the ball who then comfortably placed it right of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

"All-in-all it is a positive weekend for us, and the guys will certainly gain some confidence from how we competed as a team," said Jungemann. "Hope International has some very talented attacking players and put us under pressure at times, but we created a few good chances of our own and could easily have snuck a late goal to win."

HSU's Christopher Cherms and Robert Quintero split time in net for the second straight game, combining for eight total saves.

The Jacks are back in action next weekend as they return to the Bay Area to face Regis and Upper Iowa in Hayward.
