HAYWARD, Calif. – Humboldt State men's soccer earned the weekend split with a 1-0 result Saturday at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Classic. The Lumberjacks (2-1-1) defeated Upper Iowa (1-3) to double its win total from a season ago.
"Today was another strong team performance," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "We are working hard to improve and build confidence day by day. We have been more organized and improved our communication in every game so far this year."
Despite being outshot 11-6 in the match, it was the Green and Gold who struck first. Sophomore transfer
Max Steinmetz played a ball into the box in the 31
st minute which connected with the head of redshirt freshman Korey Gilmore. The ball was headed to the top right corner past the keeper to give Gilmore his first goal with the Lumberjacks, and his team the lead.
The score would remain 1-0, thanks in part to a penalty kick save in the 79
th minute by HSU's
Robert Quintero. The PK save was one of two for Quintero, and fellow sophomore goalkeeper added four more saves in his 45 minutes on the field.
"Upper Iowa has some very talented players and certainly made this a difficult game," said Jungemann. "Along with a good team performance, we had a couple of people step up at important times and make big plays, which made all the difference today. We will enjoy it for today, but get back to work soon and prepare to start conference next weekend."
The Jacks host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona next Friday and Sunday, respectively. The two conference games will be the first home games of the season for the Jacks.
