Coyotes Edge Men’s Soccer in Home Opener

ARCATA, Calif. – An Eric Lavery goal with 11:45 remaining spoiled the Humboldt State men's soccer home opener. Cal State San Bernardino edged the Green and Gold 1-0 Friday at College Creek Field.

"Our guys played a solid game today against a quality CCAA opponent," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "While some areas of our game continue to improve, our young team is still struggling to find its form in front of goal."

The Lumberjacks (2-2-1, 0-1 CCAA) withstood an offensive barrage from the Coyotes in the first period. HSU keeper Robert Quintero had several acrobatic saves early in the match, including stopping a shot from point-blank range courtesy of Lavery at the 28:52 mark.

Lavery notched the game winner following an HSU foul. His unassisted goal was a result of San Bernardino's strong offensive push after halftime.

HSU's front line attempted a late goal of its own, but was halted by unfortunate fouls that stalled the team's momentum. The Jacks took eight of their 13 shots in the second half and had five corner kick opportunities in the final 45 minutes.

Gus Baxter, Isaiah Dairo and Mumbi Kwesele each had two shots apiece for the Jacks.

Quintero logged 90 minutes in the goal and finished with a season-high nine saves.

"Robert had an excellent game for us in goal today," said Jungemann. "He made several clutch saves to keep us in the game."

The Jacks host Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at College Creek Field. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

"It hurts now, but we will regroup quickly and look to turn things around on Sunday," said Jungemann.
