POMONA, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball used a complete team effort to defeat Cal Poly Pomona and earn a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 26-24) win in its conference opener Friday night.
"Tonight was the first night that we really felt a good rhythm as a team and were able maintain throughout the match," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "We remained consistent with our serve receive, and we had good offensive distribution."
The Broncos committed 11 attack errors in the opening set, and HSU won the set 25-17.
HSU and Pomona traded points in the second set, but the North Coast squad pulled away late.
Nicole Bewley provided a team-high four kills in the set.
The Jacks overcame a 10-5 deficit in the third set to secure the win. An
Alex Lolland kill followed by another Pomona attack error clinched the 26-24 score.
Friday's win was HSU's first straight sets victory since defeating Holy Names on Sept. 3, 2016.
Pomona finished the game with a -.008 hitting percentage and a total of 33 attack errors.
Symone Hayden and Bewley led the attack with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Jessica Lammers (15) and
Katherine Rifilato (11) supplied double-digit assists for the Green and Gold. Rifilato led the team with 15 digs. Bewley was also active on the defensive front, and she finished with three solo blocks and four block assists.
HSU will have little time to enjoy its result as it faces Cal State San Bernardino Saturday in Coussoulis Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
