SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball led early in all three sets but lost the lead and set every time to Cal State San Bernardino (24-26, 21-25, 18-25) in CCAA action Saturday night.
HSU drops to 6-4 (1-1 CCAA) on the season while CSUB climbs to 7-2 overall (1-0 CCAA).
"The offense was never able to get going which resulted in a tough loss," said HSU head coach
Kelly Wood. "The set location was inconsistent, and it prevented our offense from getting into a rhythm."
The Lumberjacks jumped to an 11-4 lead in the first set but the Coyotes took control from there, making five straight points on two occasions to take a 21-16 lead. Humboldt was able to tie the game at 22, 23 and 24 on kills by
Alex Hasenstab,
Alex Lolland and
Nicole Bewley, respectively, but CSUB was able to close out the set, 24-26.
Humboldt led the second set 8-5, and the rest of the way was back-and-forth until it was tied at 19. The Coyotes scored six of the last eight points to win the set 21-25.
The Jacks were up 6-3 in the third set and also led 12-11, but San Bernardino dominated the rest of the play, outscoring HSU 14-6 to finish the match in straight sets.
Hasenstab led the Lumberjacks with nine kills, followed by Lolland with eight. The Coyotes had two players in double figures in kills, Lauren Nicholson (14) and Malika O'Brien (12).
Humboldt State will play its first home matches of the season next weekend when it hosts Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Chico State on Saturday. Both matches will have 7 p.m. starts in Lumberjack Arena.
