Volleyball Wins Home Opener Against Stanislaus

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team felt like finally playing at home was a dream after 10 road matches to begin the season, but Friday's game turned out to be a nightmare for Stanislaus State. The Green and Gold defeated the Warriors 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17) in Lumberjack Arena.

"This was exactly the type of match we expected," said head coach Kelly Wood. "I knew there would be a ton of long rallies, because neither team was going to go out there and dominate. We made a big shift in the third set, and we carried that momentum into the fourth. I am proud of the girls for the way they played tonight."

HSU improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win.

A 6-0 run midway through the first set gave HSU a 17-10 lead, which it never relinquished. Alex Hasenstab was responsible for three of the Jacks final six points in the 25-20 opening set victory.

The Jacks led by as many as three points in the second set, but saw that slim lead vanish behind a strong offensive showing from the Warriors. Stanislaus closed out the set on a 4-0 run and captured its only set victory of the evening.

Stanislaus led 20-16 late in the third set, but HSU recovered to steal away the win. Following an Alex Lolland attack error, the Jacks reeled off nine consecutive points to secure the pivotal third set, 25-20.

Symone Hayden provided match point in the fourth set as the Jacks celebrated their first home victory. She matched Nicole Bewley for the team lead with 13 kills.

Jessica Lammers (26) and Katherine Rifilato (18) were the Green and Gold leaders in assists.

On the defensive side, Sarah Shively (20), Nicole Bianchi (13) and Hayden (13) contributed double-digit digs.

HSU hosts Chico State Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
