ARCATA, Calif. – The Lumberjacks were without senior
Symone Hayden, but found a way to win anyway. Humboldt State volleyball defeated Chico State 3-1 (29-27, 25-22, 11-25, 25-23) Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.
"Tonight we played without one of our key components in
Symone Hayden," said head coach
Kelly Wood. "The team rallied together in a big way and played incredibly hard tonight. We had some big contributions from some of our freshmen and back row players."
Nicole Bewley and
Alex Hasenstab combined for 10 kills as the Green and Gold won the first set, 29-27.
The Wildcats led 10-6 early in the second set, but they didn't hold onto the lead for long. The Jacks evened the score, and it kept the game tight until a pair of
Katherine Rifilato kills and a
Nicole Bewley ace closed out the set in favor of HSU, 25-22.
Chico State's offense found its rhythm in the third set and hit .414. The Wildcats won the set 25-11.
HSU fell behind 7-2 in the fourth set, but recovered to seal the victory. The Jacks closed out the set on a 4-0 run, and
Alondra Haro provided match point.
Alex Lolland (10) and Hasenstab (12) finished with double-digit kills.
Sarah Shively led the team with 23 digs, while Rifilato and
Jessica Lammers kept the offense going with 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
The Jacks have almost two weeks off before traveling to Chico State on Oct. 7.
"The depth on our team is going to be a strength of ours," said Wood. "We had some younger players step up in tonight's match, and they stepped up big. We weren't ourselves during the preseason, and I really feel like our confidence in our team has grown and it will take us far."
