HAYWARD, Calif. – Going into the game against regionally ranked Regis University, Humboldt State men's soccer knew it would face its toughest opponent to date. The two previously unbeaten sides were scoreless through the first 71 minutes before Regis (2-0-0) converted a corner kick to take the game from the Lumberjacks (1-1-1), 1-0.
"Today was another hard fought game for our guys," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "Regis is a skillful and experienced team, but our guys did a good job of staying organized and limiting Regis' options for most of the game. It was another good team performance."
In the 72
nd minute of action, Regis whipped a corner kick into the middle of the box and connected with Jacob Martinez who placed it in the lower right of the goal and into the back of the net.
Regis, ranked eighth in the first The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regional poll of the season, outshot the Jacks 17-5 and took seven corner kicks compared to three for HSU.
"While they are not happy losing, our guys took another step forward with today's performance and continue to build confidence," said Jungemann. "We will regroup and look to get back on the right track Saturday."
The Green and Gold will face Upper Iowa Saturday in Hayward.
