D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase on Volleyball’s Horizon

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball (3-1) is prepared to continue its strong start at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase beginning this Thursday and running through Saturday. The tournament features Division II teams from the West Region's three conferences. The Lumberjacks will face Seattle Pacific (1-3) on Thursday, both Azusa Pacific (0-4) and Montana State Billings (1-3) on Friday, and conclude with Hawaii Hilo (0-0) on Saturday. All three of HSU's games will be played at Cal State Dominguez Hills' Torodome.

"At this point, we really are more focused on ourselves," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We have a good team, and we know that we are good enough to compete with any team within our region. If we make some changes from last weekend and clean up a couple areas of our game, I am looking forward to going down this weekend and matching up against some teams from our tough region."

The Jacks have benefitted from strong defense to begin the year. The Jacks are holding opponents to a conference-low 10.2 kills per set and 9.33 assists per set. Opponents are hitting just .136 against the Green and Gold, third-best in the conference. Through the first weekend of play, Humboldt State and Chico State hold the best records in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after both going 3-1.

HSU has also benefitted from 1.53 service aces per set, fourth-most in the conference. Symone Hayden's seven service aces are also tied for third-best in the conference after the opening weekend. The senior averaged a team-high 3.47 kills per set, which ranks third in the CCAA

"These matches are very important for our postseason play," said Wood. "Last weekend we had 13 of our 14 players get into the games. We have more depth this year and that will only help us down the stretch. I have confidence in the girls on our bench to come in and make a positive impact on the game."

Thursday and Friday's matches will be streamed online courtesy of Cal State Dominguez Hills.
