Women’s Basketball Defeats Toros, Improves to 2-0 on Road Trip

CARSON, Calif. – Three Lumberjacks scored 20 or more points as Humboldt State women's basketball defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 79-65 Saturday in the Torodome.

"This was a tremendous team win," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I thought we were moving the ball extremely well against their zone. A lot of different people contributed tonight, and we are a much better basketball team when that happens."

The Jacks (4-11, 3-5 CCAA) captured their second consecutive win for the first time this season. The loss was the Toros' second straight and they sank to 0-5 at home.

Dominguez Hills took an early lead and led for almost the entire first half. The Toros shot 70.4 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and held a 47-38 advantage at intermission.

Kindall Murie and Catharine Rees combined for 27 of the Jacks' 38 first half points. The Green and Gold connected on 10 3-pointers, and HSU shot 45.5 percent from outside the arc.

A pair of Tyra Turner layups in the final two minutes of the third quarter trimmed the Toros' lead to two points heading into the fourth period.

For the second straight game, HSU dominated the fourth quarter. Turner scored 10 of her team-high 25 points in the final 10 minutes and the Jacks outscored the Toros 21-5.

Turner (25), Murie (20) and Rees (20) all scored in double figures for the Jacks. Turner dished out a season-high 12 rebounds to go with a team-high seven boards. Murie's 20-point scoring total was a career-best.

"Tyra was unbelievable," said Bento-Jackson. "As a freshman, she's been thrown into the fire, and she is playing 40 minutes a game. She has matured and grown up so much. I am very proud of her."

Simone Thompson was the Toros' top scorer, and she finished with 24 points and a season-high eight 3-point field goals.

HSU visits Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
