Monterey Bay Defeats HSU Volleyball 3-0

ARCATA, Calif. – Nothing seemed to go right for the Humboldt State volleyball team in Tuesday's 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 17-25) loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.

"We were outplayed in every aspect of the game tonight," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "They passed better, served tougher and their ball control was immensely better. It makes it very hard to win when every aspect of the game is going against you."

HSU never led until the third set and compiled a .059 hitting percentage. The Lumberjacks dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Monterey Bay improved to 10-6 and 4-4 in conference action.

The Otters jumped out to a 5-1 lead and led for the rest of the first set. Anita Eichenour led the Green and Gold with four kills in the frame.

HSU hung with Monterey Bay for the start of the second frame before an 8-0 run by the Otters separated the two teams. The visitors' offense clicked in its 25-14 win as Monterey Bay hit .577.

A pair of Lauren Reid kills and an Otter attack error gave the Green and Gold a 3-1 edge in the final set. Monterey Bay took advantage of HSU's poor offensive effort and took a commanding 16-9 lead midway through the frame. The Otters scored five of the set's last seven points, and Anela Visesio provided match point.

Reid finished the match with a team-high nine kills.

The Jacks travel to the Bay Area for a meeting with San Francisco State on Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's road match with Sonoma State has been canceled due to the threat of fires and unhealthy air quality conditions.

"I am very hopeful that we will compete like we haven't been doing," said Wood. "I don't want to see my team lose hope, because there is still an opportunity for this team to finish on a high note. We need to continue working on set location and decision making from that position, and we have to win the serve and pass. Hopefully we can do that this weekend."
