Volleyball Finds Offensive Success in Midweek Win Over Pioneers

ARCATA, Calif. – Anita Eichenour notched a season-high 14 kills and sparked the Humboldt State volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22) win over Cal State East Bay Tuesday night in Lumberjack Arena.

"It was a strong night for us offensively," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "The coaches were so pleased to start the homestand with a win against a good East Bay team."

HSU improved its overall record to 3-10 and 2-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Back-to-back kills by Lauren Reid helped the Jacks jump out to a 3-0 lead and get in an offensive rhythm early in the opening set. HSU registered a .306 hitting percentage en route to a 25-18 win. A pair of kills courtesy of Janelle Ayala and a bad set by the Pioneers' Audrey Lamourex clinched the set in the home team's favor.

The second set featured nine lead changes, but it was East Bay that capitalized on HSU's offensive miscues and evened the match at one set apiece. The Pioneers ended the frame on an 8-4 run and picked up the 25-21 decision despite hitting just .074. Alex Lolland had three of HSU's seven kills in the second set.

HSU led by as many as eight points in the third frame and held on for a 26-24 win despite a furious rally by East Bay. A Sarah Shively service error gave the Pioneers a 24-23 lead late in the frame, but a Deja Thompson attack error and a Jessica Lammers ace put the set in the win column. Anita Eichenour led the Green and Gold with six kills in the frame.

"I told Anita that she came up with some big kills at some big times, and we needed that from her," said Wood. "Anita had a great night, and I am really happy for her."

The Pioneers never led and the Jacks offense continued to perform at a high level in the fourth set. Reid recorded her team-leading 15th kill for match point.

"We have been battling, fighting and scrapping each and every night, but tonight we finally got the win," said Wood. "We are really trying to play with consistency and prevent teams from taking off on long runs against us. We are playing against a really good team Friday night, but we want to carry this momentum into the San Diego match."

HSU hosts UC San Diego Friday evening in Lumberjack Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
