UC San Diego Defeats HSU Volleyball in Straight Sets

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State women's volleyball lost 3-0 (13-25, 26-28, 18-25)  to UC San Diego Friday night in Lumberjack Arena.

"I am pretty unsatisfied with the overall match," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "The thing that disappoints me the most are the areas we continue to struggle. We continue to talk about a few areas of the game that we are not making changes in. We continue to be close, compete and falter in the end. We just discussed that this season is far from over."

The home team hit .056 in the first set and never recovered from its slow start on the offensive end. UCSD jumped out to a 4-1 lead and went up by as many as 12 points, 21-9, following back-to-back HSU attack errors. Amanda Colla scored set point to give the Tritons a 25-13 win.

HSU trailed for much of the second set, but evened the score at 14-all with a Savannah Horton kill. Consecutive kills by Lauren Reid put the Jacks one point shy of winning the second set, but the Tritons rallied to take the set 28-26.

The third frame was competitive at the start before UCSD took over. Trailing 8-6, a 5-0 Tritons run helped them pull away from the home team and a pair of late runs locked up the match in straight sets.

Sarah Shively led the Green and Gold with 12 digs, while Lolland and Reid paced the team with 10 kills apiece. Janelle Ayala and Anita Eichenour each finished with three blocks.

HSU will need to make some quick adjustments before Saturday's meeting with Cal State San Marcos.

"We need to start doing a better job of set decision making in transition," said Wood. "We need to capitalize when we get in an advantageous position against our opponent. We have to prevent teams from going on long runs against us. We need to earn our points tomorrow night."

Saturday's home game will be HSU's annual Dig for a Cure event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
