Men’s Basketball Returns to Winning Ways Versus Simpson

ARCATA, Calif. – Making use of a 26-point, six-rebound night from Davasyia Hagger, Humboldt State's men's basketball team shook off a slow start and defeated the visiting Simpson Red Hawks 84-74.

"You're always happy to win a basketball game, but we are always trying to play the right way for the full 40 minutes," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "I don't think we played a particularly flawless basketball game tonight. There were some bright performances by certain players, and I was excited about that."

The Red Hawks jumped on the Lumberjacks early, taking a 19-10 lead at the 10:55 mark of the first half, but the home team steadily climbed back into the game and took a 39-38 lead at the half. The Jacks used the offensive boards to their advantage in the first half, with a 13-4 edge in second-chance points.

In the second half, HSU shot 61 percent from the field to aid their sustained offensive efforts, as they led by double-figures exclusively after the 10:52 mark in the game. The Jacks ran out to a 78-59 lead at 4:52 on a made three by Jack Kaub before coasting home.

Tyras Rattler Jr. contributed 16 points and seven rebounds in the victory, and Justin Everett had 10 points to go with his four rebounds.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is a road date with CCAA foe Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

"Hopefully this gives us a little momentum," said Kinder. "You can call this a trap game, but credit the guys they held it together and played with some intensity. This catapults us into Saturday's game versus San Bernardino, which will be a tough contest."
