McBride and Coyotes Trip Up HSU Men’s Basketball

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Tyras Rattler Jr. scored a season-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as Humboldt State lost to Cal State San Bernardino 77-70 Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena.

"We played hard, we played with a lot of heart, and I am proud of how we competed for 40 minutes," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We had plenty of chances to win it at the end of the game, and we were right there throughout the game. If we would have cleaned up just a few miscues, turnovers and our inability to keep them off the offensive glass, it would have made the difference between a win and a loss."

The Lumberjacks slipped to 0-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and moved to 3-4 overall. San Bernardino improved to 3-3 and 1-1 in conference action.

Blake McBride powered the Coyotes to a 46-34 halftime lead. McBride scored a season-high 16 points in the first half and helped San Bernardino capture a 12-point advantage with four 3-pointers before the break. He finished the game with 21 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

"McBride is a very good basketball player who had one of his better performances tonight," said Kinder. "The Coyotes have a lot of very good weapons on their team, and they shoot it quick in transition. You try to make your adjustments on one guy and then it's pick your poison if someone else gets going."

HSU got a boost from Jalen Terry in the first 20 minutes, as the newcomer scored 11 points – just one shy of his season-best total. The Jacks shot 46.7 percent from the field in the first half, but struggled at the free-throw line, connecting on just 2-of-9 opportunities.

"Jalen was our first sub, and he came ready to play tonight," said Kinder. "The fast-paced game suited his style well. He kept us in the game and got us going with a great spark off the bench."

Rattler scored five points in a 7-2 run that helped HSU show some fight to begin the second half. The deficit reached double digits again with just under 11 minutes to play. A cold streak from outside the arc kept the Green and Gold from pulling off a late rally as the Jacks went 1-for-13 from 3-point range.

"We want the ball in Tyras' hands," said Kinder. "He is able to break guys down off the dribble and make shots. His ability to get to the rim and get the other team in foul trouble is one of our keys to the game."

Fifteen second half points helped Rattler reach his season-high scoring total and Terry joined him in double figures with 11 points. Will Taylor grabbed a team-leading nine boards and eight came off the defensive glass.
The Jacks return home for a few days before continuing their CCAA road schedule. Kinder knows the stay on the North Coast will be short, but his team needs to stay focused on goals both on and off the court.

"We have to work on our books, get back in the classroom at 8 a.m. Monday morning and get a full two days of academics in," said Kinder. "It is important for our players to catch up with their classes and get ahead because they are going to miss Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We need to re-pack our bags quickly and go play the Otters."

HSU travels to Seaside, Calif., for a meeting with Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
