Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Andrew Goetz

Otters Defeat Men’s Basketball in Overtime 87-81

SEASIDE, Calif. – A Jalen Terry three-pointer with 13 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, but Cal State Monterey Bay outlasted the Humboldt State men's basketball team 87-81 Thursday night in the Kelp Bed.

The Lumberjacks led by as many as nine points midway through the second half after recovering from a four-point halftime deficit. Monterey Bay used a 15-3 run to take a 71-68 advantage with less than a minute to play before Terry's equalizer.

A Davasyia Hagger layup and a pair of Terry free throws gave the North Coast squad a four-point edge in overtime, but the Otters answered with a scoring barrage of their own as they captured the momentum and the victory.

"The ability to score the basketball is something we are still soul searching to find," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We are trying to learn how to make winning plays. When we had the lead tonight we relaxed and took shots that weren't game-winning shots. We got up in overtime, and we relaxed. We didn't grind out a winning shot on each possession which we needed to do."

HSU moves to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the loss.

Tyras Rattler Jr. led Green and Gold scorers with 18 points on 8-of-20 shooting, and Hagger notched his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 11 boards. For the third time in four games, Terry reached double figures and the junior finished with 11 points.

"We needed a win tonight, and we didn't get one," said Kinder. "It's going to be 48 hours of preparation. We are going to be completely focused without outside distraction. We need to gather ourselves and make it crystal clear offensively what we need to do in order to go out Saturday and get a winning result."

The Jacks travel to face Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in Kellogg Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
