Women’s Basketball Completes Road Sweep with Pomona Win

POMONA, Calif. – Utilizing an offensive attack that saw it yield just four turnovers, the Humboldt State women's basketball team emerged victorious from Kellogg Gym on Saturday night, besting Cal Poly Pomona 66-48.

The Lumberjacks were led by a 23-point, 10-rebound night from Tyla Turner, who notched her third consecutive 20-point game. They also got 17 points from Mikaela Shannon on a sterling 7-of-9 shooting night from the floor, while Tyra Turner chipped in 15 and hit 7-of-8 free throws.

"I am extremely proud of our basketball team," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "They showed tremendous toughness tonight. Tyla carried us in the first half and Mikaela really gave us a huge lift. The girls were very engaged and they did an excellent job of executing the scout on both ends of the floor."

HSU outscored the home team in every one of the four periods, but early on, it was a contentious affair. Pomona grabbed what would be their last lead of 15-14 at the 43 second mark of the first quarter before a Tyla Turner layup in the closing moments gave the Jacks the lead heading into the break.

HSU outscored Pomona 9-4 in the second quarter, taking a 25-19 advantage into halftime.

The third period saw Pomona creep to within three on two occasions, once 26-23 at the 7:01 mark and again 28-25 at 5:55, before the Jacks expanded their lead to 36-26 at 2:14 on a Shannon layup. HSU led 40-33 heading into the fourth.

The visitors poured it on in the fourth quarter, keeping a double-digit margin a majority of the period. HSU finished with a 10-2 run for the 66-48 final.

"These last three weeks have been rough on us as we have been on the road non-stop," said Bento-Jackson. "It requires toughness to do what this team has done during this stretch, and I'm so proud of them. Obviously we want to build on this and continue to improve."

The game, coming on the heels of their 64-40 victory at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, marks the Jacks' third straight CCAA win as they run their record to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference. HSU returns to the court on Thursday, hosting Stanislaus State in Lumberjack Arena with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
