Broncos Storm Past Women’s Basketball 68-44

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State women's basketball fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 68-44, Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.

The Broncos stormed out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter. HSU struggled to find an answer for Pomona and trailed 21-3 after 10 minutes of action. Catharine Rees supplied the Jacks' lone field goal.

HSU rebounded in the second quarter and cut the Pomona advantage to nine, 31-22, at the break. Madeline Hatch led the Green and Gold with nine first half points.

"We had just the single game this week, and we had been preparing for Pomona for the last five days," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "The girls were really anxious for this game. When Pomona jumped out to a big lead, I remember telling the team in a timeout out to just relax. Madeline Hatch came off the bench and gave us a spark making some threes, and I thought we went into the half with the momentum."

Pomona went on an 11-0 run to start the second half, and they took a commanding 32-point lead into the final period.

The Jacks outscored the visitors 16-8 in the final 10 minutes, and Kindall Murie led HSU scorers with six points.

Pomona's Alyssa Benton led all scorers with 32 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Benton sank eight of the Broncos' 10 long-range field goals.

Tyra Turner and Hatch led the Jacks with nine points apiece. Turner finished with six rebounds, three assists and five steals.

HSU shot 28.1 percent from the field and 27 percent from 3-point range. The Jacks' bench outscored the Broncos' reserves 24-9.

The Jacks travel to face Cal State San Bernardino Friday at 5:30 p.m.

"There were some things we experimented with tonight that we had not done thus far this year, and there were some positives we can take from that," said Bento-Jackson. "We have to take the good and bad from this game, learn from it and prepare for our next opponent."
