SAN FRANCISCO – No. 1-ranked Humboldt State softball captured a pair of wins against San Francisco State Friday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field. The home series was moved to the Bay Area due to forecasted inclement weather conditions.
The Lumberjacks (7-0, 2-0 CCAA) blanked the Gators, 5-0, in game one and secured a 6-1 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
HSU wraps the series Saturday, and the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 5, SF State 0)
Consecutive two-out singles put runners on base in the bottom of the first, and
Illa Haley did the rest. The Sacramento, Calif., native crushed her team-leading fourth home run of the season to give HSU a 3-0 lead.
The Jacks added to their lead when a
Sydney Roberts squeeze play brought home
Winona Vigil in the second inning. Vigil reached base on an error and stole second and third base leading up to the run-scoring play.
HSU's speed paid off again in the third when
Kalyn Paque swiped home following a failed pick off attempt. The senior from Reno, Nev., finished with a pair of stolen bases.
The 5-0 lead was more than enough for ace
Madison Williams. The Brentwood, Calif., product tossed a complete game four-hit shutout and fanned 11 Gators.
Tiffany Hollingsworth had a multi-hit game and went 2-for-2 at the plate.
GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 6, SF State 1)
Sydney Roberts and Hollingsworth provided RBI singles, and HSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
The Jacks plated two more runs in the fourth.
Kelly Sonnemann gave the Green and Gold a 3-0 lead with a two-out double, before stealing third and coming home on an error during the next at-bat to increase the lead to 4-0.
SF State plated its lone run of the day in the fifth, and HSU answered with runs in the fifth and sixth frames.
Lauren Lipe recorded her first RBI of the season with a single in the fifth inning, and Sonnemann stole her third and fourth bases in the sixth before a groundout scored the Jacks' final run.
Paque took the circle in the nightcap and earned her third win of the season. She went the distance and allowed just one run on six hits.
