Morgan Reaches Scoring Milestone in Men’s Basketball Loss

ARCATA, Calif. – Malik Morgan drove to the basket and scored his 1,000th point with 20 seconds left to play, but it wasn't enough as Humboldt State men's basketball lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 66-64, Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.

The Lumberjacks led by 11 with less than 19 minutes left to play, but the Toros rallied to even the score and take the lead.

Justin Sadler scored a layup with 4:51 remaining in the game to give Dominguez Hills an 11-point advantage of its own, but the game was far from over.

Morgan accounted for nine of the Jacks' last 11 points, including the milestone effort that knotted the game at 64-64. He finished the contest with a team-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go with three assists.

Sadler shot over the outstretched arms of Calvin Young II with two seconds left in regulation to seal the Toros victory. Sadler led all scorers with 24 points, 17 of which he scored in the second half. He was 10-of-15 shooting, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists.

"Sadler was a good freshman and turned into a great senior who is well-respected throughout the league," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Them going to him for the final shot of the game was no surprise, we addressed that in the time out right before it broke. He made a power move against a great player in Calvin Young, and he came out on top."

Dominguez Hills ruled the boards and outrebounded HSU 39-24. The Toros finished the game shooting 54.2 percent from the field and connected on 70.8 percent of their second half attempts.

Will Taylor had 12 points off the bench for the Green and Gold, and Tyras Rattler Jr. added 11.

"We wore the Green and Gold the right way tonight," said Kinder. "We made our fans proud with how we battled. I am excited about Malik's performance tonight and our platoon system. I told the guys to keep their chins up, and to understand they are students first. They need to graduate from this institution, and they are going to play a lot of great basketball between now and then."

HSU hosts Holy Names in a non-conference showdown Monday at 7 p.m.
